The English language can be confusing sometimes. It can also be downright frustrating. Take the word “present” for example. The same word has multiple meanings and
multiple pronunciations but all with the same spelling.
While some may find that a bit disconcerting, I tend to find
it fascinating. So, for a moment, indulge
my fascination:
Present: being, existing,
“On the following day Paul went in
with us to James, and all the elders were present.” (Acts 5:38)
Present: occurring at this time or now.
“It was to show his righteousness
at the present time, so that he might be just and the justifier of the one who
has faith in Jesus.” (Romans 3:26)
Present: to come to show (oneself) before a
person.
“Do your best to present yourself
to God as one approved…” (2 Tim 2:15)
Present: to bring, offer, or give.
“I urge you therefore, brethren, by
the mercies of God, to present your bodies a living and holy sacrifice...” (Rom 12:1)
Present: a thing presented as a gift.
The king said to Hazael, “Take a
present with you and go to meet the man of God…” (2 Kings 8:8)
Be present in the present and present yourself to present a
present to the living God!
