In my last blog post, I wrote that God has eyes. In the one previous to that, I wrote that God
has ears. While we really don’t know if God
has physical eyes and physical ears, we do know that He does see, look and
observe and that He does hear, listen and is attentive.
While we normally do have physical eyes and
ears, it can also be argued that we have spiritual eyes and spiritual ears as
well. On this spiritual side of things,
the Word of God has some interesting things to say:
Until we’ve put our trust in Christ for
salvation, we have spiritual eyes that do not see and spiritual ears that do
not hear: “Having
eyes do you not see, and having ears do you not hear? And do you not remember?”
(Mark 8:18)
There are times when our spiritual eyes and spiritual
ears are not functioning as they should:
“For this people’s heart has become
calloused; they hardly hear with their ears, and they have closed their eyes. Otherwise they might see with their eyes, hear with their
ears, understand with their hearts and turn, and I would heal them.” (Acts 28:27)
There are even times when it seems that we are
selective in what we will see and what we will hear: “You have
seen many things, but you pay no attention; your ears are open, but you do not
listen.” (Isa 42:20)
So what do we do?
We look to the Lord to help us to engage
our spiritual ears: “The Sovereign Lord has given me a well-instructed tongue, to know the word
that sustains the weary. He wakens me morning by morning, wakens my ear to
listen like one being instructed.”
(Isaiah 50:4)
We must take an active role in using our
spiritual ears: Moreover, He said to me, “Son of man, take into your heart
all My words which I will speak to you and listen closely.” (Ezekiel 3:10)
We look to the Lord to help us engage our
spiritual eyes: “I pray that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in
order that you may know the hope to which he has called you, the riches of his
glorious inheritance in his holy people.” (Eph 1:18)
We also must take an active role in using
our spiritual eyes: “looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, who
for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and
is seated at the right hand of the throne of God.” (Heb 12:2)
We do have spiritual ears to hear and
spiritual eyes to see and yet without them, we won’t hear or see God. With them engaged, our sense of hearing and
our sense of sight can be filled with His presence!
