Impressed With Christ - the "WOW" Factor

One definition of the word “impress” is to affect deeply or strongly.

One definition of the word “wow” is to excite to enthusiastic admiration

All of us likely have had those “wow” moments…something happened that affected us deeply or strongly and produced admiration.  Perhaps it was an awesome sunset or a glimpse of the beauty of creation.  Maybe it was an incredible act of love or a monumental sacrifice.  Whatever it was, it almost took our breath away and all we could say was “WOW”!

The book of Colossians has some statements about Christ that should produce some great big “WOW’S”:

Ø  He laid up a hope for us in heaven (1:5)

Ø  He delivered us from the domain of darkness (1:13)

Ø  He transferred us to the Kingdom of His Son            (1:13)

Ø  He redeemed us (1:14)

Ø  He forgives our sins (1:14)

Ø  He reconciled us to Himself (1:20)

Ø  He made peace through His blood (1:20)

Ø  He reconciled us in His fleshly body through His death (1:22)

Ø  He forgave all our transgression (2:13)

Ø  He cancelled and nailed the certificate (to the cross) of debt against us (2:14)

“WOW’s”?  You bet and even more than you can ever express!  Each should affect us deeply and strongly and produce enthusiastic admiration, maybe even taking our breath away!

Excel Still More!

To excel, according to some of the meanings from a few dictionaries, is to surpass others, do extremely well, outdo, do something better than anyone else. In 1 Thessalonians 4:1, we find the phrase “excel still more”.   It prompts the question:  if we are already doing something better than anyone else, why would we be encouraged to do even more? Perhaps it would be helpful to see the wording that other translations use for “excel still more” to see why we would be encouraged to do so.  Here is a sampling: • abound more and more • to keep doing so more and more • but try even harder • live that way more and more. • that you progress even more. • that you increase more and more in how you ought to walk Maybe it would also be helpful to see some other verses where the word “excel” is used: “Now in Joppa there was a disciple named Tabitha (which when translated means Dorcas); this woman was excelling in acts of kindness and charity which she did habitually.”...

Value Proposition

Value proposition:  it’s a marketing statement that summarizes why a consumer should buy a product or use a service.  It should clearly and concisely communicate what customers can gain from selecting a particular brand over that of its competitors. In a value proposition, you don’t want your product to be viewed as being worth less than what your competitors offer.   But even worse, in a bit of a quirk of how letters and spaces can fall, if you take out the space between “worth” and “less”, you get “worthless”, which means something of no value.   If that word is used in conjunction with how your product is viewed by customers, it’s a word that will likely kill your brand. In the book of Philippians, the Apostle Paul, in a sense, communicated some value propositions. In chapter three, he starts off with describing the value of some things that many considered as extremely valuable in that day and age.   They had to do with status and achievement in the reli...

Hide Not...

Over the centuries, the words have brought great comfort and encouragement.   The words are often used as a benediction or a blessing:   The Lord bless you and keep you: The Lord make his face to shine upon you, and be gracious to you: The Lord lift up his countenance upon you, and give you peace.   (Num 6:24-26)   What in the world is a countenance?  By definition, it is a person's face or facial expression. So if the Lord’s face shines upon us and if He lifts up His countenance upon us, what does all that mean? It means that He is giving us His attention.  But even more so, His face shining upon us gives us t he picture of a beaming face like that of a parent for their beloved child.  And the reference to Him lifting up His countenance points to God extending divine favor and peace to us. Sometimes we can appreciate things more by seeing opposites.  The opposite of a lifted face is a face that has fallen, perhaps because of sham...
